The typical diets of bodybuilders are in a class all their own. Most of us don’t need to wake up at 3 a.m. to suck down protein shakes. So it’s surprising that Sylvester Stallone actually seems to have a sane diet these days. This wasn’t always the case. In addition to bulking up and getting ripped for his movie roles, he’s also starved his body to the point where fainting was a real possibility. For other roles in which he needed a more muscular physique, Stallone’s meal planning focused on protein.
For Rocky III, Sylvester Stallone subjected his body to a starvation diet. He subsisted on just 10 egg whites a day, along with one piece of toast. Occasionally, he’d eat one piece of fruit. This diet got him down to 155 lbs. Somehow, he found the energy to go for two-mile runs, two hours of weight lifting, and 18 rounds of sparring. After he lost the weight, he ramped up his protein intake to build up his muscle.
It’s no surprise that Stallone had problems maintaining his energy levels on his starvation diet. He drank huge amounts of coffee to get himself through those workouts. In Sly’s own words, working out without eating anything forced his body to “cannibalize itself.”*
Preparing for Rocky III wasn’t the only time Stallone has subjected his body to brutal weight loss regimes for a movie role. While training for his role in “Victory,” Stallone ate a mere 200 calories of protein per day. He also ate one baked potato daily to keep himself from fainting. Don’t try this at home. Not only will you suffer from extreme fatigue, you’ll also run the risk of developing life-threatening cardiovascular conditions.
Fortunately, Stallone seems to have regained his sanity over the years, and now sticks to healthier meal planning. A typical breakfast for Stallone starts with a glass of liquid amino acids, followed by a couple of eggs, some figs, and a slice of pumpernickel toast. After his workout, Stallone eats a salad and broiled, skinless chicken for lunch, along with broiled squash and more figs. Dinner is often broiled fish, paired with another salad, some steamed spinach, and a couple slices of toast.
Stallone’s diet is packed with healthy, low-cal veggies and high-fiber toast. He also prefers lean proteins like chicken or fish, although he does occasionally eat red meat. Sylvester Stallone seems to have a thing for figs – the actual fruit, not the cookies. Figs are an excellent source of fiber, which can help with weight management. They also contain a high amount of potassium, which can help maintain a healthy blood pressure.
Sylvester Stallone’s workout has always been hardcore, particularly when he’s bulking up for a movie. His average workout begins with warming up and stretching. Stallone works on his arms first, lifting weights for about 45 minutes. He’ll work his shoulders for another 25 minutes, and then move on to ab workouts, such as sit-ups, which last about 30 minutes. Stallone is also a big fan of shoulder twists. Impressive as the weight lifting is, this workout routine could use a little cardio.
